Get to Know Ailing!
Three Months of Wonderfolk and One Month until Costa Rica.
Every July, our students prepare to go to Costa Rica, and for many of them, it is their first time traveling to this Central American country.
While the month of June stands between our students and Costa Rica, we want to reflect on their journey so far with Wonderfolk. Ailing is one of our bright Wonderfolk students, and she shares her experience with Wonderfolk so far.
Wonderfolk: What is your name, where do you call home, and who is your community?
Ailing [A]: Hi! My name is Ailing, though many people like to call me Ling. I grew up in Southeast Portland which is a unique and diverse place I call home. I identify with various communities, including the Chinese-American community, which is central to my cultural identity and family traditions. Additionally, I am involved in student government, where I enjoy working with others to create positive changes in my school and community. Last but not least, I identify as a student-athlete, I am passionate about sports and the camaraderie it brings. Each of these communities plays a significant role in shaping who I am, I value the experiences and perspectives they offer.
Wonderfolk: What year are you in school and how did you hear about Wonderfolk?
A: I currently attend David Douglas High School and I am a rising senior. I first heard about Wonderfolk during my freshman year. A representative came to my school to talk about the program and to encourage students who are interested in developing as leaders and impacting communities to apply.
Wonderfolk: What caught your attention the most about Wonderfolk and why did you apply?
A: What caught my attention the most about Wonderfolk is its mission. Their mission is to develop diverse young leaders through access to unique leadership opportunities, and they do this by focusing on three pillars: Unity Through Arts, Naturehood, and Global Leadership. Wonderfolk provides a platform to amplify our agency, impact our communities, and shape our futures. This mission aligns perfectly with my personal goals and aspirations, which is why I decided to apply. They are a meaningful program and something that I wanted to contribute to and grow in. Many of my friends and classmates also participated in Wonderfolk and spoke very highly of it, which also encouraged me to apply.
Wonderfolk: Now that you have been part of Wonderfolk for 3 months, what has been your favorite part so far?
A: Now that I have been part of Wonderfolk for 3 months, my favorite part has been the community. Wonderfolk welcomed me with open arms to a group of individuals who are motivated, passionate, and genuine about what they do. I am surrounded by kids my age who share similar aspirations, goals, and are very driven. Additionally, the staff members are caring, understanding, and truly the sweetest people I've ever met. Their support and dedication have made my experience at Wonderfolk truly special.
